Messing about on the beach

So incredibly hot today. May be suffering the after-effects of heat stroke now. What are the symptoms? My brain feels like a liquid substance

Thailand – Day of beaches and snorkelling

Spent the morning in a boat, taking in some key spots on Koh Phi Phi, swimming and snorkelling. The scenery is amazing, the photos don’t do it justice.

Sydney

We’ve spent a very relaxing 3 days in Sydney, staying with John and Anne, Rachelle’s parents. After the big effort to pack up our flat and get ready to travel it’s been great to do nothing much and just recharge.

There are no cares, nothing to plan, nothing to strive for. People rush around us, going about their lives with intention and presence while we float through, only seeing the surface and wondering idly what the meaning of it all it. Disconnection.

Sydney seems nice. Lots of parks and generally prosperous looking people. Are there an extraordinary amount of warning signs, with very strong language on them (“DO NOT DO xyz OR WE WILL STOMP YOU”), or am I just noticing them more because I’m foreign? I keep looking at everything in comparison to ‘home’. Will this stop, after a while? Can I ever directly perceive what is infront of me?

In a couple of hours we fly to Bangkok!

I’m going travelling very soon…

On the 19th of January Rachelle and I will be flying to SE Asia, and from there to the UK via the Trans-Siberian railway. We don’t know exactly how long it will take or how long our money will last for, but we estimate roughly 6 to 8 months.

So I’m starting up this blog again, after several years of dormancy. The software has come a long way since 2007 when I last used it – now I can embed videos and write blog posts from my cellphone or tablet. Each blog post gets automatically shared on Facebook, in theory (this post will test that!).

We’re not going to actively look for work while we are away, so at this stage the plan is to return to Wellington from the UK once we run out of money or get tired of a life of leisure.

Take care of yourselves while we’re away. We’ll be back before you know it.

Airport chaos

I’ve now been in Hong Kong airport for 5 hours, and we haven’t taken off… I’ve boarded a plane once, read a bit of book, then they asked everyone to get out and go to gate 30. While leaving the plane we were told to go to a different gate, gate 69. 15 minutes of sitting at gate 69 later, and we were shunted off to gate 30 after all. All the people who were at gate 30 (going to Frankfurt?) were shifted to our old gate, 69.

Our new leaving time is 11 pm, 2 hours later than the original. Thankfully I have the free wireless internet to keep me entertained….

Dali – Yunnan province

Real china. Glad I caught it before it’s changed…

Guangzhou

Industrial city. Much construction, factories and smog. Not that nice, but it’s reality.

Only stayed one night, in a green area that was once a British consession after the opium wars. Many lovely old colonial buildings.

Caught a flight to Yunnan province, down near thailand + laos + vietnam area.

Went to Shenzhen and met up with Chinese friend, went to dinner and drinks. Had many new food experiences.

Shenzhen fairly unremarkable; a less intense hong kong
